August 2009 - A scary time for the entire Intermountain Area, but all's well (in beautiful Hat Creek), thanks to the incredible efforts of Cal Fire and the various fire crews from all over the west!! Mountainous trees and vegetation were burned, but not a single structure or Hat Creek ranch lands lost. The largest burn nearest our valley was up at Sugarloaf Mountain near Old Station. Nearest to us here at DHCR, the 'Brown Fire" was on the hills west of Highway 89 (behind the post office and on up the hill). The awesome foot crews, air bomber crews and helicopter crews (with the help of the cold, crisp Hat Creek waters) doused the flames and achieved containment in a relatively short time. The smoke has completely cleared the intermountain area and the beautiful Hat Creek Valley preserved.
